UNDP Regional Hub primarily provides UNDP Country Offices in the Latin American region with easy access to knowledge through high-quality advisory services and technical support based on global applied research and UNDP lessons learnt. The second priority is to provide regional thought leadership, build partnerships and promote regional capacity building, which allows UNDP, governments, and other development partners to identify, create and share knowledge relevant to solving urgent development challenges.

GENDER EQUALITY SEAL FOR PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS

Addressing gender equality and women’s empowerment is a key aspect of UNDP’s approach to achieving its core vision. Gender equality and women’s empowerment are seen as goals in their own right and are also central to the achievement of UNDPs development mandate.

In response to requests from UNDP offices and national partners around the globe, UNDP is now ready to help governments to put in place strong and practical mechanisms to strengthen the policy process, agenda and procedures that will ensure that gender equality considerations are integrated into every aspect of national development. The Gender Equality Seal for Public Institutions is a practical guide to support and acknowledge the efforts of public institutions towards achieving substantive gender equality within the framework of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

The Gender Equality Seal for Public Institutions Standards Matrix sets out clear performance benchmarks for integrating gender equality concerns into public administration. These benchmarks are based on global commitments and requirements under international treaties and conventions. They will help to design concrete public administration reform plans to deliver gender sensitive policies towards the achievement of the SDG Agenda.
Public institution/applicants are invited to assess themselves using the GES online platform, in five key dimensions and 40 benchmarks on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

1. Planning and management for gender equality:
Reviews the public policy cycle to ensure a gender perspective throughout the design, formulation, monitoring and evaluation phases, including analysis of human and financial resources and sex-disaggregated information systems, in the context of the 2030 Agenda.

2. Gender equality architecture and capacities:
Examines organizational structures and horizontal and vertical coordination mechanisms, gender expertise and learning processes, leadership, external communications, and knowledge management.

3. Work environments to enable gender equality:
Analyzes and improves women’s participation and access to decision-making positions, facilitating work-life balance for all and preventing gender-based violence, sexual harassment and discrimination.

4. Participation, partnerships, and accountability:
Sets the scope for improving inter-institutional coordination and partnerships with external organizations and citizen participation for gender equality in the policy cycle and accountability mechanisms.

5. Results and impact of public policies:
Allows the public institution to showcase its efforts and results towards advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in its area of competence.

The Latin America and Caribbean region have been a pioneer in the implementation of this UNDP flagship. Currently, 12 countries in the region participate in the programme, and UNDP provides technical support to 48 public institutions. The programme is implemented online through a virtual platform (https://www.gendersealpublicinstitutions.org/).




Duties and Responsibilities


Tasks / Expected Outcomes

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Gender Team Leader the intern will support the regional team coordinating the implementation of the Gender Equality Seal in Public Institutions:

Knowledge Management and communication:

  • Support the systematization of information on internal pages such as Intranet.
  • Contribute to the development, review, and publication of knowledge products in close coordination with the Regional Hub teams.
  • Systematization of infographic and photographic products to be used for communications purposes.

Technological and statistical Support:

  • Participate in inductions to the online tool conducted by the Regional Hub.
  • Attention to queries from users of the Seal's online platform and the Gender Virtual School.
  • Update tracking/follow-up systems to monitor the progress and results of the program’s regional rollout , including collecting data and statistical analysis , visualizing data
  • Support activities such as online workshops and webinars to provide pragmatic guidance and capacity building opportunities and tools to design and implement gender-responsive policies and initiatives.

  • Effective supervision through knowledge sharing and performance/development feedback throughout the assignment.
  • Easy access to the supervisor.
  • Participation in Unit/Team/Office meetings to ensure integration and operational effectiveness.
  • Guidance and advice in relation to learning and training opportunities within the field of expertise.
  • Completion of Performance Review.



Required Skills and Experience


Education, Experience, Language requirements

Education: Be enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (such as Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in social sciences, international relations, or related disciplines; a background in IT disciplines or a current IT training will be an asset.

or

Be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher) in social sciences, international relations, or related disciplines; a background in IT disciplines or a current IT training will be an asset.

or

Have graduated with a university or graduate degree social sciences, international relations, or related disciplines; and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

or

Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.


Strong commitment to promoting gender equality, excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Experience:

Experience in development and gender equality would be desirable. Experience with Moodle LMS is a plus.

Language Requirements:

Must be fluent in Spanish and English.

Experience in any other UN language is a plus (especially French and/or Portuguese).

Internship Conditions
(Remote Internship / Home Based).
As of January 1, 2020, Interns may be given a stipend according to the UNDP Internship Policies, if is not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation or scholarship programme.
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • Interns must provide proof of enrolment in Health Insurance Plan valid for the location, and the duration of the internship.
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • Interns are expected to work full time, but flexibility is allowed for education programmes;
  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months;
  • Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas, arranging travel, accommodation.
