Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)


The British Embassy in Copenhagen, part of a world-wide network representing UK political, economic and consular interests overseas, is looking for an innovative and politically minded individual to support our work on strategic communications and digital media as a Communications and Digital Media Assistant. As part of the Political Section you will be a central part of our effort to strengthen the Embassy’s outreach and influence to the Danish government, public and wider civil society and promote the close and long standing relationship between the UK and Denmark.

The Communications and Media Assistant will be collaborating with colleagues across the Political Section, and broader Embassy to understand the UK’s position on key issues and advise on how best to influence key stakeholders and build Danish support for UK policy priorities. You will use diverse digital media channels and grow our reach and influence across the Kingdom of Denmark.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Political Section and colleagues from across the Embassy to plan and develop Embassy external communications – with a focus on social media and digital comms, ensuring maximum impact in terms of engagement, perception-shift, enhancing the UK-Denmark relationship, and promotion of the UK brand in Denmark
  • Work with Political Section in assisting to identify, track and report media reporting, commentary and analysis on issues
  • Assist in development of strategic digital communications to support communications campaigns on key policy issues which impact the UK and its policies
  • Assist in increasing the Embassy’s presence and impact on social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn). This will entail developing new, creative ideas for content and campaigns, producing text, photos and videos, and monitoring the social media landscape for trends and developments
  • Assist with the Embassy’s key public diplomacy campaigns, particularly on the Social Media side
  • Assist the political team as needed with desk research, translating, and other ad hoc assignments. The team covers everything from climate change, arctic, security and defence to science and innovation
  • Deputise for the Head of Press as necessary


Essential qualifications, skills and experience

To succeed in this exciting and challenging role, you will need the following:

  • Extensive (ideally min. 3 years) communications experience
  • Professional social media skills and ability to find creative ways to reach your target audience, be able to see the bigger picture
  • Fluency in English and Danish, both written and spoken (minimum of C1 CEFR framework level language*);
  • Ability to work as a self-sufficient, enterprising and results-oriented individual, driven by interest in media and social media

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • In addition to a communications background, we are looking for a candidate with strong interpersonal skills, and interest in Danish and UK politics, and wider current affairs is also desirable
  • A background in the Danish digital media sector, Danish politics, or international affairs is desirable but not essential.

This is a full-time and permanent contract.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.

The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for Denmark in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Copenhagen are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Danish employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Denmark and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
